Mary Ann Murphy

August 4, 1952 ~ August 3, 2020 (age 67)

Mary Ann Murphy was born on August 4, 1952 in Yazoo City, Mississippi to Simon and Willie Lee Hackett who preceded her in death. Mary was commonly referred to as “Mae” by family and friends.

Mary graduated from Yazoo City High School in 1971. From there, she went on to attend Alcorn State University. After college, she moved then spent a brief period in Georgia and Alabama where she started her family.

In the early eighties, she and her family relocated to California. Upon their move to California, she decided to pursue a career in nursing and begun her career at Upland Convalescent. She would then move on to Casa Colina Hospital and several other local hospitals resulting in a 30-year nursing career.

Mary was a fearless and passionate person. She is known to be a loving mother with an outspoken nature at any and everything! She was not one to hold her opinion back and would tell it like it is. Her strength was also demonstrated through her faith. Her church home began in Yazoo City at Calvary Baptist at an early age. Upon moving to California, she joined Macedonia Baptist Church in Pomona for several years and later attended The Rock Church in San Bernardino and Sunrise Church in Rialto.

She is survived by her two children, Sedric Murphy and Sidney Murphy III and her grandchild, Micah Sidney Murphy. She loved her children and grandchild more than anything. They were her world. Her family will always remember her fierce personality, gracious support, and commitment to push through any circumstance that came her way.

The others that will cherish her memory are her twelve brothers and sisters, Beatrice McCray, Robert Hackett, Delores Johnson, Eddie Hackett, Tommy Hackett, Charles Hackett, Betty Currington, Larry Hackett, Gloria Williams, Stacy Hackett, Tracey Hackett and preceded in death by sister Arlene Banks. She will also be remembered by a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many faithful friends.
